The Pekingese, also known as the Lion Dog, is an ancient breed of toy dog, originating in China. The Pekingese breed is over 2000 years old and has hardly changed in all that time. Polite with strangers and usually accepting of other animals, the pekingese is one of the most dignified and independent of the toy breeds. He is calm and quiet indoors and doesn’t need much exercise,
Cockapoos have been around since the 1950’s. A Cockapoos is a cross between a purebred poodle and a purebred cocker spaniel. Any size poodle can be used and an American or English cocker is used. We use a large toy poodle and an American Cocker Spaniel. Our poodle is the sire and the Cockers are our moms. The temperament of the Cockapoo is awesome! Cockapoos are highly trainable with keen intelligence. They are out going, curious and eager to please. They can do well with one person or a family with children.
A fun-loving “designer dog” TLC Kennel combines only first generation Toy Poodles with Yorkshire Terriers to create the preferred smaller Yorkiepoo. The Yorkipoo has a low-dander, low-shedding coat, and is happy in many different types of homes. They make an excellent companion for the elderly and with their gentle and loving disposition, the Yorkipoo has proven to be a successful therapy dog as well. Morkies are one-half Yorkshire terrier and one-half Maltese and can take on characteristics of one or both parents. In the last few years Morkies also have become increasingly popular because they exhibit the desirable traits of both breeds.
Generally, Morkies range in height between 6-15 inches and weigh between 5-10 pounds, depending on the size of their parents. Most are small averaging around 7 to 8 pounds as adults. Morkies bred at TLC Kennel are always first generation cross.
West Highland White Terriers are a hardy breed that has a friendly disposition that makes an ideal companion. With a short compact body, erect ears, and a pure white coat, West Highlands are a stand out everywhere they go. This dog is a bundle of fun and one of the most requested breeds at TLC Kennel.
Hybrid breeds such as the Shih Tzu/Poodle are always in demand. He may have the curly coat of a Poodle or the long, straight coat of a Shih Tzu, but he always has a cute, alert expression and a sturdy body. Like his parent breeds, the Shihpoo can come in a multitude of solid colors or in a particolor pattern (a color plus white). Shihpoos are playful, friendly and affectionate, always happy to sit in a lap and give a little love. They generally weigh 7 to 20 pounds, depending on the size of their parent breeds. For their size they are courageous and make excellent watchdogs.
The Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu cross is getting to be increasingly popular, and, with good reason. It is a relatively low maintenance dog that makes an ideal companion. The Shichon is small, about 9 to 12 inches in height and 10-15 pounds when an adult. Shichons have an average lifespan of between 12 and 15 years. It’s coat colors can be a variety, although they tend to favor the light shades and is practically non shedding with regular brushing. A sturdy, low-set, alert, and active dog, the Corgi has an intelligent and bold expression that is slightly fox like in appearance. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are very affectionate, love to be involved in the family, and tend to follow wherever their owners go. They have a great desire to please their owners, thus making them eager to learn and train. Corgis are one of the most agreeable small house dogs. Peekapoos are a cross breed between a Pekingese and a poodle. Like the parent breeds, Peekapoos can be friendly, affectionate dogs. Like poodles, they can be easy to train, and like other small breeds can live 12 to 15 years or older. They are small dogs with mop like hair of varying colors including black, white, brown, and tri-colored. The Peekapoo was bred to be a companion dog who was also low shedding and hypoallergenic. Schnoodles are first-generation crosses, with two purebred parents: a poodle and a schnauzer. Schnoodles may possess the rough hair and strong body shape of the schnauzer, or the thinner shape and the curly hair of the poodle, or any combination of these characteristics. They can be affectionate, naturally protective, intelligent as the schnauzer and/or clever, active, and excelling in obedience training like the poodle. Schnoodles may inherit any combination of intelligence, personality, temper and protective nature of the parent breeds. They make good pets and are often devoted and affectionate to their family. This dog breed of the terrier group is completely devoted to its family members and known for being obedient to commands, super intelligent and always on alert, so they’re great watchdogs. The Pomeranian is named for a region that once included parts of Poland and Germany, but he is descended from the Spitz dogs of Lapland and Iceland. The Pomeranian is a proud, lively little dog. The Miniature Pinscher is a dog that looks like a smaller version of the Doberman Pinscher breed. However, the two breeds are unrelated, and, in fact, the Miniature Pinscher breed is older than the Doberman Pinscher. The Miniature Pinscher is a hardy little fellow who is proud and courageous. He is loyal, spirited and alert with high energy, intelligent, lively and brave. They are generally good with other pets and children. Typically Miniature Pinschers weigh 8-12 pounds and stand 10-12 inches tall at the shoulders. Known for having silky white hair, the Maltese is a small toy breed that is believed to have descended from the dogs that originated in Central Mediterranean Area. The exercise needs of the Maltese may be met with a short leash-led walk, or indoor games. Its coat, which may be clipped for easier maintenance, requires frequent combing. The Maltese is generally considered an unsuitable outdoor dog but can fare well in either the city or the country. Maltese are bred to be cuddly companion dogs. They are extremely lively and playful. The Lhasa Apso is a non-sporting dog breed originating in Tibet. Lhasa Apsos are alert with a keen sense of hearing. The Dachshund was first bred in Germany in the 17th century as a fearless dog who would dig for and hunt badger. The Dachshund is a bold, tenacious, devoted, loving and protective dog. He has lots of energy but he is also playful, fun, happy and outgoing. He loves to be part of everything and needs lots of attention and scratches from you. He bonds very closely to his owner and will follow you around . He needs a regular though moderate amount of daily exercise and play-time inside the house, or outdoors. The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog and is named for the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. The Chihuahua has become a very popular dog in America. Chihuahuas come in a wide variety of sizes, head shapes, colors, and coat lengths. The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest of the terrier breeds, originating in the Scottish Highlands and recognized as one of Scotland’s earliest working dogs. A small, rugged dog with a shaggy coat, the Cairn Terrier is outgoing and a lively addition to any household. This dog enjoys meeting new people and especially enjoys being around his human family. The Cairn will stay close to its people and wants to interact with them as much as possible. Cairns get along well with children, and will happily play with them.
